An atomic explosion made with pipe cleaners, puff balls and glitter; a man in a taco unfolding out of the cosmic void; a meditative examination of replication, the life-cycle through tiny graphite circles; a sculptural ‘mandala’ composed of Fruit Loops; and the beauty of pure pigment on canvas. These are some of the offerings to be found in CRIT3, an exhibition at Spencertown Academy Arts Center opening on Sunday, August 10, 2008.
CRIT3 is the third in a series of annual exhibitions showcasing the exciting new art being created in the studios of area colleges and universities. This year’s curator Kathy Goodell, Professor at The State University of New Paltz, includes work from 35 young artists including recent alumni, graduate students, and upper level undergraduates.
Goodell sees this generation of artists as the most exciting she has taught. “Today’s students are savvy about politics, environmental and social dilemmas. They feed insatiably on contemporary culture and delve into what they see as ‘ancient art history’ of the 1970’s through the 1990’s using digital and computer technologies to absorb resources and inspirations.” CRIT3 embraces the chaotic diversity of work emerging from this climate.

The alumni work represented appears to be less devouring of the culture, more classical, more internalized, less comic, less satiric. “I was interested in including alumni to reveal the continuum of our students out in the art world as an extension of the womb that art school provides,” says Goodell.
The exhibition embraces the energy of ‘art school’ and the complexity of the current generation of art students. The work spans many mediums and approaches, including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, and metals. In addition to the variety of art making technique Goodell says, “CRIT3 exposes the diversity of students’ topics of interest. Topics veer from social critique (usually laced with a good deal of humor) and the absurdity of cultural rituals, to the opposite extreme - the meditative, sublime, and transcendental longings of art-making.”
